Smoking Ban Affects Bingo Halls

The new Scottish smoking ban is suffocating the revenues for Scottish bingo halls. People that are used to smoke while playing bingo decide to gamble somewhere else, mostly from their home at online bingo sites. According to a recent report, the Rank Group, owner of the prominent UK Mecca Bingo chain, recently announced that revenues generated by its Scottish clubs had dropped by 14% since the smoking ban was implemented 13 weeks ago.

Mecca Bingo's overall revenue for its 117 bingo parlors across the UK was reportedly down by 1% in the first two quarters of 2006. The Rank Group also saw admissions decrease by 6% in the company's 14 Scottish bingo clubs since the ban was introduced. In addition, the spending amount per individual was down 9%.

A similar ban on smoking is slated for implementation in Wales and England by mid-2007. England is known to be a major bingo loving nation, and it is expected that bingo player in Britain will favor online bingo sites while smoking in their homes, than sitting in a smoking free bingo hall.
